The Comeuppance by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Sunday December 14, 2-4 PM at The Studio, Comox. Presented by Erin Malin.
“A group of former high-schoolers meet, 20 years on, to reminisce and reconnect – or that’s the idea, anyway. Instead they end up drinking, fighting and ruing the disappointments of their middle-aged lives. What looks like a typical American reunion drama is – finally! – a thoughtful post-pandemic play by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.” The Guardian

Sleeping Beauty: the panto

written & directed by MANDY TULLOCH

Join Dame Nanny Hugwell – the palace’s loudest, proudest and most overprotective  nanny/housekeeper as she juggles raising the spirited Princess Aurora and her own gentle son Buttons along with her rambunctious triplets. It’s a joyous celebration at the palace until the uninvited and fabulously fierce Maleficent crashes the party and placesa wicked curse on baby Aurora. On her 16th birthday she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into an eternal sleep! Thankfully, the three slightly scatterbrained but well-meaning fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather soften the curse, and Aurora is hidden away in the forest under the watchful eye of Nanny Hugwell and Buttons. Years later, as Aurora blossoms into a brave young woman and Buttons tries and fails to keep up with Royal life, the handsome and kind-hearted Prince Stephan stumbles into their lives. But Maleficent along with her side kick Diablo hasn’t finished her wicked games. With true love, mistaken identities, outrageous costumes, catchy songs, magical mayhem, and possibly a dragon that might just need a hug….will the prince break the curse or will Maleficent have the last laugh! Packed with laughs, love and lashings of panto fun, Sleeping Beauty is the magical adventure the whole family will love ——Oh yes you will!

MYTH OF THE OSTRICH

by Canadian Playwright Matt Murray

Directed  by Kirstin Humpherys

This comedy opens at the home of Holly, a self-help writer and single-mom to teenager, Jodi. Holly’s morning is interrupted when Pam shows up unannounced.  Having found a letter from Jodi to her teenage son, Evan, Pam deems the letter inappropriate and is eager to discuss matters.  What starts a pleasant enough visit between two moms meeting for the first time, quickly becomes a complicated bizarre and hilarious roller-coaster ride of misunderstanding, as Holly soon realizes Pam has no idea what’s actually going on between their kids.  The mess and confusion of this precarious situation launches into orbit with the arrival of Holly’s outrageous and filter-less best friend, Cheryl.  One lie leads to another and another, and another as Holly and Cheryl do everything in their power to try to keep Pam in the dark.  Little does either of them know, Pam may not actually be the head-burying ostrich they think she is…..

Review:  “…. a hilarious roller coaster ride of twists and misunderstandings, and the result of what happens when two opposing values collide. You will be kept laughing until the end and then you realize that it is really about a mother’s love and how to navigate the different values and opinions that we all face in the world today.” from our own Marianne Harris who saw the play in PEI
