PLAY CLUB

2025 PLAY CLUBs will be held on Saturday afternoons between 1-4 PM at the CLT Space!
April 26Blood Relations by Sharon Pollock, presented by Annie Smith
Saturday May 24 at 1PM: Scenes of a Marriage –

Three short one-act plays: The Proposal (by Anton Chekhov),
The Forced Marriage (by Jean-Baptiste Molière), and The Bear (by Anton Chekhov),
presented by Michael Bach.

Three comedic one-act plays by 17th and 19th century masters of the form are linked in this reading. Each mocks social institutions and explores battles of the sexes, gender stereotypes, soul-searching and indecision. They are also about finding love in unexpected places, at inconvenient times, and against one’s better judgment. While different plays, we will read these three volatile farces as scenes from before, during, and after the same marriage. Different names, same characters, and second chances to get it right.

Please note: Play Club reading for May 24th will be at CLT’s new “Studio Space” – lobby of the old St. Joe’s Hospital on Comox Ave. in Comox (now vacated and a dedicated space for CLT). There is parking right there – entrance to the parking lot off Comox Ave. between Rodello St. and Manor Dr.

Play Club:
  • is a play reading club that operates without charge by and for CLT members. We read plays aloud together, just for the fun of the learning experience, and discuss our responses to these plays.
  • CLT directors can present a play reading and receive oral and written feedback from listeners before they submit it to the Selection Committee for consideration.
If you are interested in being a play presenter, reader or listener, please come out to a Play Club meeting and/or contact Catherine Hannon, Play Club coordinator, c/o  info@courtenaylittletheatre.com

MYTH OF THE OSTRICH

by Canadian Playwright Matt Murray

Directed  by Kirstin Humpherys

This comedy opens at the home of Holly, a self-help writer and single-mom to teenager, Jodi. Holly’s morning is interrupted when Pam shows up unannounced.  Having found a letter from Jodi to her teenage son, Evan, Pam deems the letter inappropriate and is eager to discuss matters.  What starts a pleasant enough visit between two moms meeting for the first time, quickly becomes a complicated bizarre and hilarious roller-coaster ride of misunderstanding, as Holly soon realizes Pam has no idea what’s actually going on between their kids.  The mess and confusion of this precarious situation launches into orbit with the arrival of Holly’s outrageous and filter-less best friend, Cheryl.  One lie leads to another and another, and another as Holly and Cheryl do everything in their power to try to keep Pam in the dark.  Little does either of them know, Pam may not actually be the head-burying ostrich they think she is…..

Review:  “…. a hilarious roller coaster ride of twists and misunderstandings, and the result of what happens when two opposing values collide. You will be kept laughing until the end and then you realize that it is really about a mother’s love and how to navigate the different values and opinions that we all face in the world today.” from our own Marianne Harris who saw the play in PEI
